Paver Patio vs. Concrete Patio: Which Is Right for Your Yard?

Both work. They fail differently, cost differently, and repair very differently — and in Wisconsin, that last one matters a lot.

The honest version

Concrete is cheaper up front. Pavers cost more and look better, and in a freeze-thaw climate like ours they hold up better over time. Neither one is the wrong answer — it depends on your budget and how long you plan to be in the house.

Why freeze-thaw is the whole conversation in Wisconsin

Our ground freezes, thaws, and moves. Poured concrete is one rigid slab — when the ground shifts underneath it, it cracks, and a crack in a slab is permanent. A paver patio is hundreds of individual pieces sitting on a flexible base. When the ground moves, the pavers move with it. That's the core difference.

Repairs are where pavers win big

If a paver stains, cracks, or settles, you pull that paver and replace it. Ten minutes, and it's invisible. If a concrete slab cracks or a corner settles, your options are live with it, patch it (and see the patch forever), or tear it out and repour. That's the part people don't think about at the estimate.

Where concrete makes sense

Tight budget, large plain area, or a purely functional surface where looks aren't the priority. If you need to cover a big footprint cheaply and you're okay with the odds of cracking down the road, concrete does the job.

Where pavers make sense

Anywhere the patio is part of how the yard looks — which is most backyards. More design options, better long-term durability in our climate, easy repairs, and it genuinely adds to how the property shows. If you're staying in the house a while, pavers usually earn the difference back.

The part that matters more than either

The base. A paver patio on a bad base will fail, and so will concrete. Proper excavation, the right depth of compacted base, and correct drainage are what make either one last. When you're comparing quotes, ask what's going underneath — not just what's going on top.
