Mulch vs. Rock: Which Should You Use in Your Beds?

The most common question we get. The answer depends on what's planted there — and how much work you want to do every year.

The trade-off in one line

Mulch is better for plants and needs refreshing every year or two. Rock is better for low-maintenance and lasts basically forever, but it's harder on plants and a pain to change your mind about.

Why mulch is better for planted beds

Mulch breaks down and feeds the soil. It holds moisture at the root zone, moderates soil temperature, and keeps roots cooler in July and insulated in January. If you've got shrubs, perennials, or anything you want to actually thrive, mulch is the better choice.

The catch with mulch

It breaks down — that's the point — which means it fades and thins out. Most beds want a refresh every year or two to keep the color and the weed suppression working. That's not a flaw, it's just the maintenance trade you're making.

Where rock wins

Foundation strips, side yards, drainage areas, around downspouts, and anywhere you want to set it and forget it. Decorative gravel and river rock don't decompose, don't blow away, and don't need replacing. For low-traffic, low-planting areas, rock is the lower-effort answer.

The catch with rock

Rock holds heat, which stresses plants in summer. It doesn't feed the soil. Leaves and debris settle down into it and are miserable to clean out. And if you ever want to change it, you're shoveling out every stone by hand — far more work than switching mulch.

What actually determines success with either

Weed barrier and clean edges. Without a proper barrier underneath, weeds come up through both. Without a defined edge, both migrate into the lawn. The material on top gets the attention, but the prep underneath is what makes it look good in year three.

What we usually recommend

Mulch in the planted beds where things need to grow, rock in the utility areas where nothing does. Most properties are better off with both, used where each one actually makes sense.
